Michelangelo was a genius of the renaissance period. His skills were legendary – painter, architect, engineer, mathematician and philosopher but he is perhaps best known for his paintings.
Michelangelo, one of the greatest artists, times have seen, is held in high regard by the masses. Artists from all around the world derive inspiration from his works. Though it has been centuries after he expired, the world still remembers him for his artistic genius.
Here are 9 interesting facts I found about him:
1/ He didn’t like school and would rather have been painting.
2/ His full name is Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni.
3/ David was left-handed.
4/ The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel ceiling is 1720 square meters. Michelangelo took four years to paint 343 figures from the Bible and classical times.
5/ Michelangelo was also a poet. There are about 300 of his poetic works still in existence.
6/ Michelangelo was often dissatisfied with himself and his work.
7/ He lived to be 89 years old. Life expectancy during his time was 43 years.
8/ At the end of his life, Michelangelo destroyed many of his sketches. He did not want people to know how hard he had worked. As recently as 2007, a very rare chalk sketch had been discovered in the Vatican archives.
9/ He was 5 feet, 4 inches tall. His masterpiece, David, was carved from a 19-foot-tall block of damaged marble and was finished when he was 29 years old.
